According to Scopely, the publisher and co-developer of Monopoly Go!, the game’s development began back in 2016. Over the next seven years, Scopely poured $70 million into building a version of Monopoly that could thrive in the mobile ecosystem—not just in terms of downloads, but in long-term retention and revenue.
“Monopoly is one of the most loved board games in the world, but that doesn’t mean it automatically makes for a great mobile game,” said Scopely co-CEO Javier Ferreira. “We had to ask ourselves, ‘What is the feeling people love when they play Monopoly—and how do we bring that to phones?’”
Early prototypes struggled to hit the mark. Some versions leaned too heavily into skill-based mechanics, which made them feel too competitive and unlike the classic game. Others failed to foster enough social interaction, a core element of the Monopoly experience.
